Division of Access to Healthcare
A review of the United States’ diverse system reveals that disparities in access to needed healthcare services are increasing for minority and poor Americans at an alarming rate. In particular, African American, Hispanic, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, and poor Americans are facing increasing difficulty in simply entering the health system, then approaching physician offices, clinics, and hospitals for needed services, and lastly, finding patient-centered providers with whom they can develop a relationship of trust [The National Healthcare Disparities Report].

Within the Center’s overall mission to improve health and eliminate disparities, the Division of Access to Healthcare will first evaluate the availability or absence of resources, structures, and policies required to increase access; secondly, it will illuminate patients’ evaluations of their access to care and their assessments of the patient-centeredness of their care providers; and thirdly, informed by assessments, evaluations, and research, it will make public health policy recommendations to increase access to care for minority and poor Americans.
